While civic and religious leaders marched over the Edmund Pettus bridge, Congressman John Lewis, a friend of Martin Luther King Jr. and supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, stopped everyone and asked His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America to lead everyone in prayer. Congressman Lewis reminded everyone that just as Archbishop Iakovos participated in the Civil Rights Movement in 1965, Archbishop Demetrios is also supporting the effort.
